Current project: Mixed-use developments along the Austin–San Antonio corridor, including a 60-acre town center in Elgin, a district-scale project in San Marcos and a Marriott Tribute hotel on Austin’s South Congress Avenue. Latest accomplishment: Entitling a $600 million development pipeline for 2026/2027 after taking more than 4,000 apartment units full cycle as a general partner. Latest contribution to others: Board service with Pratham USA’s Austin chapter, helping underprivileged children in India get into school and learn well. What’s been your big (or biggest) leap? Leaving a stable pharmaceutical science career to go all-in on commercial real estate. A few years later, I was owning and operating apartment buildings across Texas. Hobbies: Fine wine, especially Napa Cabernets, poker nights with fellow entrepreneurs, architecture and home design, traveling the world and connecting people who should know each other.
Personality profile: Extrovert, curious, systematic and eternal optimist. What one word would your closest friend use to describe you? Compassionate. Moral compass: My father’s example. How do you define an ideal business relationship? Win-win-win. Everyone at the table wins, keeps their word and wants to do the next deal together. What is your greatest joy? Watching a place we built fill up with people living their lives. What is your guilty pleasure? Staying at the poker table for one more orbit after I told everyone I was leaving.
What was your first paying job? Teaching assistant for the pharmacy lab at St. John’s. The assistantship paid my entire master’s tuition and I graduated with no student debt. Besides your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life? Elon Musk, for proving that first-principles thinking scales to anything, and Louis Pasteur, whose “chance favors the prepared mind” has been my operating system since the lab. What’s the best advice you received growing up? Always make good use of your time. What personal circumstance has had the greatest influence on your life? Taking a pharmaceutical job in Texas in the early 2000s. It put me in Texas exactly one year before my first real estate deal.
What is your big idea?
Every real estate deal has DNA. Sequence it like a scientist, with data, controls and stress tests, and investing stops being a gamble.
What message do you want to send out into the world? The data is public. The discipline is rare. Bring the discipline. What widely held belief do you reject? That real estate success comes from gut instinct and lucky timing. What mega-trend most excites you? The Austin and San Antonio regions growing into a single megaregion economy, the way Dallas and Fort Worth did.
What title would you choose for the movie about your life? The Science of the Deal. I already wrote the book version. Who would you like to spend an evening with, in heaven? My father. I would show him what his advice about time turned into. As a kid, what did you first want to be when you grew up? A scientist. Medicine and science were the family currency; the surprise was where the method ended up being applied. After your loved ones, what object would you first save from your burning home? My first manuscript of The Science of the Deal. What advice would you give your younger self? The deals you walk away from will make you more money than the deals you close. Learn that faster.
