Current project: Scholarly research and publication on contemporary Cuban politics.  Recent professional development: Presenter at the plenary of the Association for the Study of the Cuban Economy.  Latest accomplishment: Published an article in Democratization, “Inching toward democratization: Comparing Cuba’s National Assembly Elections, 2018 and 2023” 32:5 (2025). Latest contribution to others: Chair of the finance committee for the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.  What’s been your big (or biggest leap)? Climbed Red Hill in New Hampshire in fewer minutes than anyone else my age.  Recent travel or adventure: Southern France – prehistoric caves, medieval history, lots of hiking.  Recent unique acquisition: College and high school graduation photos from my grandsons.

Personality profile: Congenial, team player, hard-working, reliable.  What one word would your closest friend use to describe you? Smart.  Moral compass: Respect the dignity of every person. How do you define a perfect friendship? Fun and can converse about both light and serious issues.  How do you define an ideal business relationship? Satisfactory for both and able to reach goals that matter.  Reliability in the relationship.  What is your greatest joy? My family.  What is at the top of your bucket list? Traveling across Canada on the Trans-Canada Rail.  How do you relieve stress? Hiking.

What was your first paying job? Field hand in the food import business.  What was your favorite college course? Diplomatic History of the United States.  What movie have you repeatedly watched? Casablanca.  Besides your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life? My paternal grandfather and my maternal grandmother.  What’s the best advice you received growing up? Fill this box with your medals.  What’s the best advice you received in your career? Stick with it.  What is your go-to source of news and information? The New York Times (online) and The Economist magazine.

What change are you working on to effect in your profession or field?

Greater transnational sourcing of journal authors.

What change would you like to see in the world? Universal healthcare.  What widely held belief do you reject? There is no such thing as Hell.

Who would you like to spend an evening with, in heaven? Mario Vargas Llosa.  After your loved ones, what object would you first save from your burning home? My desktop computer. How would you choose to spend tomorrow, if you knew it was your last day on earth? With my spouse, Mary, kayaking on Wakondah Pond in New Hampshire.  What day in your life would you choose to re-live? My college commencement.
