Board director and communications consultant Joanna Massey, in brief.

Dr. Joanna Massey

Home: New York City and Los Angeles.  Age: No thank you. I came up the ranks in the media industry where men age gracefully and women age out.  Birthplace: New York City.  Profession: Queen of Pivoting: Board Director +  Consultant + Author + Corporate Speaker + Doctor of Psychology + Angel Investor + University Professor  + TBD.  Significant other: No man comes between me and my best buddy, Pugsley (on Instagram @pug_life_with_pugsley).  Alma mater: Harvard, USC (2x), Antioch, and the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.  Languages spoken: Je parle français mal, mais j’adore la langue.

Current project: Serving on the Boards of KULR Technology and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association - it is exhilarating work.  Recent recognition: Power Woman of New York.  Latest contribution to others: Being kind to strangers.  We have to  be the change we want to see.  Recent travel or adventure: I flew to LA and back to NYC on the same day.  I used American Airlines as my hotel room.

What one word would your closest friend use to describe you? Classy.  How do you define an ideal business relationship? Give and take.  What is your greatest fear? I have lived all of them and survived, so none.  Not even death.  How do you relieve stress? Meditation.  What ingredient is essential to your perfect vacation? A beach.  What is your go-to workout? SLT (it’s a modified pilates class).

Who has had the greatest influence on your life? My mom.  What is the best advice you received growing up? Let the play come to you.  What modern technology innovation do you most appreciate? The Blackberry (it had a keyboard!).  What is your favorite app? Backgammon NJ.  If you ever see me looking at my phone while I'm on an airplane or a subway, I'm playing  backgammon on this app.  I am like an addict.  What company or organization do you most admire? Walmart.  It is a family run business headquartered in a small, conservative town in Arkansas that has embraced its environmental and social responsibilities as a global citizen.  I hope to sit on the Board.

What mega-trend most excites you? All of the institutional investors, stock exchanges, proxy services and state governments that are mandating environmental responsibility and diversity on corporate boards.  What mega-trend most concerns you? The number of Americans - worldly, well educated people whom I know and respect - who fall prey to conspiracy theories thanks to their social media bubble.

Who would you like to spend an evening with, in Heaven? My dad.  He died when I was 17.  What advice would you give your younger self? You know that roller coaster ride you like at the theme park? That’s what life is like, so keep that perspective and enjoy the ride.  What period in your life would you do differently if you could? I wouldn’t go back for anything.  My life experiences made me who I am now and I love being me.

Personal motto: I am enjoying the journey and I am not worried about the destination.  Favorite quote: "We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are" (Anaïs Nin, quoting Talmudic text).
