Current project: I’m working on a research project through which I aim to articulate the relationship between loneliness and polarization. Hobbies: Soccer and cricket. I also enjoy solving puzzles like the New York Times crossword. Last book read: The Righteous Mind, by Jonathan Haidt, which has been really helpful with my research. Recently viewed and recommended: Join or Die, a documentary produced by Dr. Robert Putnam.
How do you define a perfect friendship? Having each other’s backs, which includes being honest with the other person, especially when they’re in the wrong. What is your greatest joy? Spending time with friends and family. What is your favorite place (or way) to spend money? My hometown, Chennai. I love almost everything about it. What is your go-to workout? Gym multiple times a week. When possible, I love to play cricket or soccer. What ingredient is essential to your perfect vacation? I’m a huge foodie, so trying the local cuisine or going to a good restaurant.
What was your favorite college course? English Literature, a class I took for my final paper. What book have you repeatedly read? 1984, by George Orwell. Whenever I read parts of this book after long gaps, I come away with new understanding. What movie or show have you repeatedly watched? Ted Lasso, which perfectly captures the importance of empathy and demonstrates the power of belief. What’s the best advice you received growing up? My dad always tells me about the value of hard work and hunger, and specifically, that success can often lead to complacency.
What is your big idea?
Loneliness and polarization are strongly related. Moreover, I observe that loneliness exacerbates polarization and vice versa.
What change would you like to see in the world? I’d like to see more engagement: stronger community ties, open discussions (even if they end in disagreements) and, most importantly, greater empathy. What mega-trend most concerns you? The rise of affective polarization. It worries me that people can hate and alienate each other without even discussing their perspectives.
Who would you like to spend an evening with, in heaven? Nelson Mandela. As a kid, what did you first want to be when you grew up? A train conductor. I loved trains growing up. After your loved ones, what object would you first save from your burning home? My dog. How would you choose to spend tomorrow, if you knew it was your last day on earth? With friends and family, eating some nice food and enjoying each other’s company one last time.
